Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) Curriculum intent

Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) helps children to develop the skills and attributes that will help them to manage their lives, now and in the future. At St. Anne’s we believe Personal, Social and Health Education should be tailored to the needs and demographics of our children and therefore we aim to cover the majority of objectives through our wider curriculum to ensure the teaching of PSHE is embedded and prominent in all aspects of learning. Where necessary some objectives are covered through explicit lessons if we have found that our curriculum does not cover the objective adequately or specifically enough.  Below you will find an overview of our PSHE objectives, when and where they are covered in the wider curriculum or how they are addressed in a specific explicit lesson if they are not covered.

Sex and Relationships Education (SRE)

In September 2020 changes in Government legislation meant that primary schools are now required to teach a curriculum which will ensure that they are able to make informed and safe choices about sex and relationships. The aim of Sex and Relationships Education (SRE) is to provide children with age appropriate information, explore attitudes and values and develop skills in order to empower them to make positive decisions about their health-related behaviour. A whole school overview for SRE with new curriculum guidelines can be found below for your information, including the specific vocabulary introduced in each year group. Individual Year Group Overviews can also be accessed below which detail each year’s objectives more specifically.

Drug, Alcohol and Tobacco Education (DATE)

The Department for Education (DfE)’s statutory guidance for Health Education at primary phase requires that pupils be taught the facts and risks associated with drug, alcohol and tobacco use. Alongside the statutory requirements, the PSHE Association recognises that teaching about how to manage social influence, pressure and risk is vital in promoting pupils’ ability to navigate the situations in which they may encounter substances. It also contributes to safeguarding, by providing pupils with the knowledge, understanding, attributes, skills and strategies to keep themselves healthy and safe. Below the Drug, Alcohol and Tobacco Education Overview can be found which details how children are effectively taught about drugs, alcohol and tobacco and the associated risks to health and safety at each Key Stage.

E-safety

At St Anne’s we believe children have the right to enjoy childhood online, to access safe online spaces, and to benefit from all the opportunities that a connected world can bring to them, appropriate to their age and stage. As they grow older, it is crucial that they learn to balance the benefits offered by technology with a critical awareness of their own and other’s online behaviour and develop effective strategies for staying safe and making a positive contribution online. Our E-safety curriculum aims to equip children with the skills, knowledge and values they will need as they grow up and enter an ever-changing, increasingly digital society. Today, the importance of teaching our children from a young age to be digitally literate cannot be overstated. Our E-safety teaching is delivered both explicitly through our Project Evolve e-safety scheme and discretely through our SRE and computing curriculum. Below the overview can be found which details how each E-safety objective is covered specifically.

Picture News

During our weekly Key Stage assemblies, we use Picture News.  Each week a current news story is chosen to discuss. This gives children opportunities to learn about our world, develop independence, resilience, respect and to unlock their own drive and passion for learning. Resources are designed to provide opportunities for children to learn from our world and develop respect for other’s beliefs, feelings and faiths. They encourage exploration, discussion, challenge and inspire children to learn!

Teaching the news not only provides great content and stimulus and grips children’s attention, it is also something that the children can impact. It is current, happening now and so their voice is given meaning and purpose. It is our world and we all matter!
