Welcome to Year 1

Things to remember…

We change our library books every Tuesday morning.

This half-term, PE will be on Tuesday and Wednesday. Full PE kits will be needed for both days.  This includes socks as tights are not to be worn with PE shorts.

Children bring home a reading book from school, please spend some time listening to them read and asking questions about the book. Spellings are sent home on a Friday for a test the following Friday.  Homework will also be sent home every Friday and is due back in school the following Thursday.

What will we be doing this half-term?

Our topic this half-term is called ‘The Enchanted Woodland’. We will be learning about different animals which live in woodland areas and the seasonal changes which occur in Autumn. We will also learn some names of trees, leaves and flowers and compare animal body parts to human body parts.

In English, we will be reading the book ‘Ferdie and the Falling Leaves’ – which will fit in with our Enchanted Woodland topic. We will focus on writing descriptive sentences remembering capital letters, full stops and finger spaces. We will also be revising our phonics sounds from Reception before moving on to phase 5 sounds a little later in the year.

In Maths, we will be practising to count from 0-50, practising to write the digits 0-20 and also starting to spell the numbers 1-10 in words. We will be comparing bigger and smaller numbers and also finding one more and one less than a given quantity. We will be using equipment, such as, number lines and 100 squares to count.

In PE, we will be working on basic movement and throwing and catching skills over the half term.

Don’t hesitate to ask any questions. Our door is always open.
